Steel Toe Shoes

Steel toe shoes are shoes which have a steel toe cap underneath the leather toe cap. They are engineered to protect the wearer’s toes. To be in compliance steel toe shoes from every brand must comply with the specifications of (ANSI) American National Standard for Safety-Toe Footwear, Z41.1.

Steel toe shoes can be graded with one of three impact ratings and one of three compression resistance ratings. The impact ratings are 30, 50 and 75, according to how many foot-pounds the steel toe can withstand upon impact without compressing into your toes. The compression resistance ratings are also 30, 50, and 75. The steel toe on a 30 shoe will withstand 1,000 pounds of static pressure, a 50 will withstand 1,750 pounds of pressure, and a 75 will withstand 2,500 pounds of pressure. The best protection is provided by the highest rated shoe, but even the lowest rated shoe offers substantially more protection for your toes than any non-rated shoe.

Examples of work which require safety-toe footwear are: warehouse operations; moving operations involving heavy equipment; work involving close contact with large animals; and jobs requiring work with certain chemicals. Steel toe shoes often have a resistant sole.
